BYD Auto, the Chinese automaker, is expanding its presence in India with the introduction of its third model, the Seal all-electric sedan. Set to join the Atto 3 SUV and e6 MPV in BYD’s India lineup on March 5, the Seal EV has already generated interest, with dealers unofficially accepting bookings for the model. Recent sightings of the Seal sedan being tested on the outskirts of Chennai have further fueled anticipation.
While the Seal sedan is available in international markets with two battery pack options, it is expected that the Indian market will receive the 82.5kWh battery variant. This battery, equipped with BYD’s patented ‘Blade Battery’ technology, can be charged at speeds of up to 150kW. Power will be delivered to two motors, one on each axle, producing a combined 530hp and 670Nm of torque. With a claimed 0-100kph time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 180kph, the AWD Seal offers impressive performance for a car weighing approximately 2.2 tonnes.
The Seal sedan measures 4,800mm in length, 1,875mm in width, and 1,460mm in height, with a 2,920mm long wheelbase. It features a 400-litre boot and a 53-litre frunk. Designed with BYD’s “ocean aesthetics” design language, the Seal showcases a coupe-like all-glass roof, flush-fitting door handles, four boomerang-shaped LED DRLs, a split headlamp design, and a full-width LED light bar at the rear. These design elements are expected to appeal to Indian buyers.
Priced around Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom), the Seal EV will soon be available for delivery after prices are announced on March 5. While the Seal does not have any direct rivals, it will compete with models such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 SUV and Kia’s EV6 crossover in terms of pricing.
BYD Auto’s expansion in India with the launch of the Seal all-electric sedan demonstrates the brand’s commitment to the growing Indian electric vehicle market. With its impressive performance, range, and attractive design, the Seal is poised to make a mark in the Indian automotive landscape.
