Amidst speculation and reports of Congress leader Kamal Nath considering a switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he arrived in Delhi on Saturday. As one of the prominent Congress leaders, Kamal Nath’s potential departure has raised questions about the reasons behind his discontent with the party. While he has not confirmed the switch, he has also not denied it, leaving room for speculation.
Kamal Nath’s close associate, Sajjan Singh Verma, indicated that his boss had been insulted, leading to his current state of dissatisfaction. Verma stated that when a person’s respect, insult, and self-respect are hurt, they tend to reconsider their decisions. This statement suggests that there is indeed a rift within the Madhya Pradesh Congress, although no final decision has been made regarding Kamal Nath’s departure.

Verma further revealed that Kamal Nath is deeply hurt over an undisclosed issue within the Congress. His visit to Delhi is to meet with senior leaders, indicating his intention to discuss his concerns and grievances. Sources suggest that Kamal Nath had been in contact with BJP leaders since the Congress high command held him responsible for the party’s defeat in the Madhya Pradesh elections. Additionally, his removal as the Madhya Pradesh Congress president and the denial of the leader of opposition position in the state assembly further contributed to his dissatisfaction.

One specific issue that caused Kamal Nath’s displeasure was the announcement of Ashok Singh’s name for the Rajya Sabha, as Singh is considered a loyalist of Digvijaya Singh. Kamal Nath had aspired for the Rajya Sabha seat, and this decision added to his frustration.

In an attempt to pacify Kamal Nath, the Congress party referred to him as “Indira Gandhi’s third son.” Jitu Patwari, a Congress leader, emphasized Kamal Nath’s long-standing association with the party and his leadership as the Madhya Pradesh Congress chief for the past seven years. Patwari recalled how Kamal Nath’s leadership was supported by Congress workers during the toppling of the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh by Scindia. He dismissed the rumours of Kamal Nath leaving the Congress as baseless, highlighting the strong bond between Kamal Nath and the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Digvijaya Singh, another Congress leader, affirmed his conversation with Kamal Nath, emphasizing the loyalty Kamal Nath has shown towards the Nehru-Gandhi family throughout his political career. Singh expressed disbelief in the possibility of Kamal Nath leaving the families of Sonia Gandhi and Indira Gandhi, given their long-standing association and support for each other.

While the situation remains uncertain, the potential departure of Kamal Nath from the Congress has raised significant questions about the internal dynamics and challenges faced by the party. As one of the key leaders, Kamal Nath’s decision could have far-reaching implications for both the Congress and the BJP.
