I don’t want to risk getting injured. However, I still drive on highways and occasionally in the village when I visit my mom.”

Shami’s childhood was marked by simple pleasures. He reminisced, “I come from the land itself. I have driven tractors, buses, and trucks on the fields. One of my school friends had a truck, and he allowed me to drive it. I was young then and drove it around on the grounds. I even drove our tractor into a pond once, which earned me a scolding from my father.”

Today, Shami has become an icon in his hometown, as evident from the overwhelming turnout of his fans at his farmhouse. Shami revealed, “My brother was told, ‘If you can move my chair, the boy will be selected. Otherwise, sorry.’ My brother replied, ‘Forget moving the chair, I can turn it upside down. I have that much power.’ But we didn’t want that. If I have the capability, I should be selected. We were told that people with capability are of no use here. That day, my brother tore up the form and declared that we would no longer be involved in UP cricket. And that was my last day in UP cricket.”

Shami’s determination led him to Kolkata at the age of 14-15, where he sought guidance from his coach and remained steadfast in his pursuit of playing cricket. He gained valuable experience and eventually joined the Arun Lal academy. Despite the challenges of a short run-up and an unconventional lunch of chickpea curry, Shami persevered. He shared, “I thought I would get rice and lentils too, but it was an experience that taught me a lot.”

Shami’s journey was filled with struggles, including financial hardships. He recalled, “I received an offer from a club, but they weren’t paying. The struggle continued, and one day, a club official gave me Rs 25,000. It was a significant moment for me.”
