In a shocking turn of events, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Khan have been sentenced to seven years in prison and fined for their unlawful marriage. The court ruled that their marriage, which took place in 2018, violated the law, leading to this adverse ruling. This marks the third setback for Imran Khan in a single week, as he is also barred from contesting the upcoming national elections.

Imran Khan, aged 71, has faced a series of legal troubles recently. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for leaking state secrets and an additional 14 years, along with his wife, for illegally selling state gifts. Along with the jail time, both Imran Khan and Bushra Khan were fined 500,000 rupees ($1,800) each.

The specific charge against Bushra Khan was that she did not complete the waiting period mandated by Islam, known as “Iddat,” after divorcing her previous husband and marrying Imran Khan. The couple had signed their marriage contract, called a “Nikkah,” in January 2018, in a secret ceremony that took place seven months before Imran Khan became Prime Minister for the first time.

There was controversy surrounding the timing of their marriage, with questions raised about whether they had wed before the waiting period was complete. Initially, Imran Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), denied the January marriage but later confirmed it weeks later. Throughout the process, both Imran Khan and Bushra Khan vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

Currently, Imran Khan is serving his prison sentence in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, while his wife has been allowed to serve her sentence at their hilltop mansion in Islamabad.

This latest development has further compounded the challenges faced by Imran Khan, who was once a charismatic former cricket superstar turned politician. With the upcoming national elections looming, these legal setbacks have effectively barred him from participating in the political process.

It remains to be seen how these developments will impact the political landscape of Pakistan. Imran Khan’s PTI party will now have to navigate the elections without their leader, potentially altering the dynamics of the race.

As the news of Imran Khan and Bushra Khan’s sentencing reverberates throughout Pakistan, it raises questions about the rule of law and the accountability of public figures. The judiciary’s firm stance on unlawful actions, regardless of one’s position, sends a strong message about the importance of upholding the law and maintaining the integrity of the justice system.

While Imran Khan and his wife face the consequences of their actions, the nation watches as events unfold, waiting to see how this will impact the political landscape and the future of Pakistan.
