The founder of Jet Airways, Naresh Goyal, appeared in court and made a heartfelt plea, expressing his despair and deteriorating health amidst the alleged Rs 538 crore fraud case. Goyal, who is currently in judicial custody, painted a grim picture of his personal life, including his wife’s battle with cancer.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Naresh Goyal in September 2023 in connection with an alleged bank fraud worth Rs 538 crore. He is currently in judicial custody at Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail. On Saturday, Goyal moved a bail application before special judge M G Deshpande and was produced before the court.

During the proceedings, Goyal sought a few minutes of personal hearing, which the judge allowed. With folded hands and continuous tremors in his whole body, Goyal submitted that his health was in a precarious state. He revealed that his wife, Anita, is in the advanced stage of cancer and undergoing treatment, while their only daughter is also unwell.

Goyal emphasized the limitations faced by the jail staff in providing him with the necessary assistance. He pointed out his swollen and painful knees, stating that he was unable to fold his legs. The judge observed Goyal’s trembling body and his need for assistance even to stand.

The septuagenarian businessman, whose health is deteriorating, expressed his desire not to be sent to J J Hospital and instead requested to “allow him to die in the jail itself.” He cited the difficulties of the journey and follow-up appointments as reasons for his request.

Goyal’s plea conveyed his loss of hope in life and his preference to die rather than continue living in his current situation. He highlighted the challenges he faced in accessing timely medical care in the overcrowded hospital, where long queues of patients made it difficult for him to reach the doctor and receive proper follow-up treatment.

Furthermore, Goyal admitted that his health did not permit him to attend court personally. However, he insisted on a physical appearance this time to personally submit his concerns. The judge assured Goyal that his mental and physical health would be taken care of and that he would not be left helpless.

The special court directed Naresh Goyal’s lawyers to take appropriate steps concerning his health. In his pending bail plea filed in December last year, Goyal mentioned multiple health conditions, including heart, prostate, and orthopedic issues. He also claimed that there were reasonable grounds to believe that he was not guilty.

The ED case against Goyal, his wife, and some former Jet Airways executives is based on a CBI FIR alleging a Rs 538 crore fraud at Canara Bank.

Despite the serious allegations and legal proceedings, Naresh Goyal’s plea in court offers a glimpse into the personal struggles he is facing, including his wife’s battle with cancer and his own deteriorating health. The court’s assurance to take care of his mental and physical well-being emphasizes the importance of considering the human aspect in such cases.
